TRITON BAY, INDOnesian papua 16/3 to 23/3/2019
ITINERARY
Two hours by boat from Kaimana, Indonesian Papua we will reach this hidden gem. A bay to ourselves, in an eco-friendly resort. No roads, no tourists, just us and our dive boats. From miniature pygmy seahorses to massive whalesharks, and including rare walking sharks and beautiful flasher wrasses, Triton Bay offers almost everything a diver could ask for.
THE REGION
In 2008 Kaimana Regency declared a 6000 sq km Marine Protected Area around the waters of Kaimana and Triton Bay. The marine biodiversity here is second to none and continues to surprise us with new finds every time we go diving. Dubbed by some as “the next frontier of Indonesian diving” and the “last best place”, Triton Bay offers something for everyone both above and below the waves. And best of all you will be one of only a few divers enjoying the waters in this very remote area.
Over 30 dive sites are already identified and many more yet to explore. Dive sites range from pinnacles to shallow soft coral gardens, huge boulders draped in colorful corals, massive black coral bushes, drift and wall dives, as well as the opportunity for critter hunting. Triton Bay is becoming best known for its beautiful soft coral gardens and already call it the “soft coral capital of the world” .
THE DIVING
Diving in Triton Bay has many aspects. Being the only resort in the area means that no one else will be at the sites, giving divers the sense of real exploration. There are amazing macro sites for all typical macro subjects like nudibranchs, candy crabs, frogfish etc. But Triton Bay really excels at Pygmy Seahorses of which there are 4 species (Bargibanti, Denis, Pontohi and Satomi - various colorations)here and Flasher Wrasse, some of which are endemic to this region.
The coral pinnacle sites offer large and colorful coral growth and massive swarms of schooling fish. There are three types of Wobbegongs here as well as the famous walking sharks.
And then there are the Indonesian fishing platforms, the bagans. On a good day up to 5 whalesharks might be cruising around those platforms. Since 2017 dolphins have figured out the logic, and are also around when the fishermen throw some bait fish in the water. But since only Triton Bay Divers and a couple of irregular liveboards visit, this experience is still prestine and we would have the sharks and dolphins to ourselves. A dive of a life time.
FROM OUR 2018 VISIT
