Tobias Friedrich is one of the most successful underwater photographers of the last decade, with a long list of international awards to his name, including Underwater Photographer of the Year 2018.
He began shooting underwater with a DSLR in 2007. Since then, his images have been published in leading scuba diving magazines and newspapers around the world, and he has written several books, including coffee table books and photography teaching books.
Tobias feels at home in all kinds of waters, from subzero conditions to warm tropical seas, as long as there are compelling images to make. He brings that same curiosity and experience into the trips and workshops he leads for Insider Divers.
Alongside his photography career, he leads international expeditions and workshops and was invited to join the judging panel of the Underwater Photographer of the Year awards as its youngest ever panel member.

This was my first ever overseas dive trip and photography workshop. I was super nervous but the boys made me feel very at ease. This trip was very well organized with the itinerary full of planned dives and workshops.
Q&A
When did you start exploring the ocean and how did your passion develop from there?
I started scuba diving in 2001 because I was always fascinated by the adventures of the Calypso and Jacques Cousteau. Since then, my passion, especially for underwater photography, has grown a lot and I can’t imagine diving without a camera.
What was your best moment in the wild thus far?
My best moment in the wild was witnessing a pod of more than 20 orcas hunting herring in Northern Norway.
What do you like about being a group leader?
I really enjoy meeting new and interesting people from around the world, and seeing their happy faces when they have a great encounter or take a beautiful picture.
The most important things you are trying to achieve for your guests?
For me it is important that everyone has what they need and has a great time during the trip, so they leave with good memories and want to join the next one too.
