Tonga is the on of the top places in the world to swim with humpback whales. If you want to experience a remote whale destination, Eua is the right expedition for you.
Everyone knows Vava’u in the North and we love it there. While Vava’u has great whale interactions there are always other boats around. Not so in Eua, where we will be mostly alone on the water. Another plus -
almost all whales that visit Tonga pass by Eua, as it is in the South. So there is a lot of new animals coming in every day.
Sharing the waters with these majestic creatures is awe inspiring. You will swim up close with some of the largest animals in the world as well as their curious offspring. These majestic creatures come to the islands of Tonga from July to October to birth their young and the usually calm and clear waters are perfect for whale swimming. We expect to meet curious babies whales, relaxing or playful adults, male “singers” and if we are lucky a male heat run!

Our remote base located on the island of ‘Eua in the Kingdom of Tonga. ‘Eua is reachable by charter flight from the international airport in Tongatapu. Blue Water Retreat has absolute ocean frontage and the bunaglows and restaurant faces the ocean. In whale season the Blue Water Retreat boasts the best land based whale watching in the Kingdom of Tonga and dozens of whales frolic in the ocean right in front of us. The retreat also features jacuzzi, ice bath, massages and sauna.

We will bring you close to big whales - above and below the water.
Our mission will always be responsible, ethical encounters. When the whales give us the impression that they do not mind our presence in the water we will gently approach their space.
We will aim to see various behaviours such as socializing, singing, courtship and juveniles

Whale watching
You will be out on the water with the whales all day - closer and more intimate than anywhere else in the world. The Humpback whales will allow the boats close and often choose to come even closer to the boats for inspecation. You will hear their blows, smell their breath and feel the awe of their enormous size.
We will be observing the behaviours all day, finding the right time to swim with them. We do this in a respectable way, not interfering in their behaviour, keeping the distance when they begin to form bait balls of herring

We will only swim with whales on their terms. Our policy is animal-lead. Fortunately humpback whales are naturally curious and are often interested in humans.
We will not force encounters, respecting the animals signals.

Simon is an award winning photographer and PADI scuba instructor. He is the founder of Insider Divers and the main group leader on our trips. Having dived all over the world he often felt unsatisfied by the dive operations, by the background knowledge of the guides and by the inflexibility of the itineraries. Bucket list trip to Tonga trip with Insider Divers. The travel was long and difficult but the trip was fabulous. We experienced many different kinds of encounters: two mature females, solo males (singers), and the highlight - mother and calf. If I could cry happy tears while soaking wet, I would have! Just a phenomenal experience. Included in the trip were Simon’s excellent presentations about whales, which were informative and interesting. Simon sees to all the trip details, including giving us all amazing shots of us in the water with the whales. FAQ
How likely will I see the whales underwater?
Tonga has the largest aggregation of humpback whales in the world, thousands arrive every year.
These majestic creatures come to the islands of Tonga from July to October to birth their young, mate and socialize. We always pick peak season slots for our trips.
The likelihood of seeing the whales underwater is close to 100%. The only thing that will cause us to miss out on whale time is bad weather and even in that case we can mostly find wind-sheltered areas to observe the whales. You might not swim every day with whales but it is very unlikely that you will not see them under water.
What experience level do I need?
Requirements are that you can swim and snorkel. This is open sea swimming, so if you are not comfortable swimming you should get some training. Please talk to us for recommendations on how to get ready for this expedition.
We recommend that you have familiarized yourself with your equipment.
We do not support swimming with buoyancy aids like vests or boards.
What equipment do I need?
You should bring your own mask and snorkel as well as exposure protection (rash guard, jacket or wetsuit). We recommend simple freediving fins as well as a rubber belt for weights.
When is the best time to swim with humpbacks in Tonga?
The Tonga humpback whale season runs from late July through early October, when the whales arrive in the warm, sheltered waters of Vava'u to breed and raise their calves. Prime mother-and-calf encounters and singing male encounters peak from mid-August through September.
What marine life can I expect in Tonga?
The focus is humpback whales, including mother-and-calf pairs, heat runs (competitive groups of males pursuing a female), and singing males below the surface. Other wildlife such as dolphins, reef fish, and pilot whales are possible but the trip is specifically built around respectful humpback encounters.
How do I get to Tonga?
Fly into Fua'amotu International Airport (TBU) in Tongatapu, then take a domestic flight to Vava'u (VAV). Common international connections to Tonga are via Auckland (AKL), Nadi (NAN), or Sydney (SYD). An overnight in Tongatapu before the domestic connection is recommended.
