Dominica gives Insider Divers access to one of the best places in the world to encounter sperm whales in the water. The trip is built around respectful, animal-led whale encounters from shore-based accommodation and daily boat operations. Dominica is unique as it is the only place that has “resident” sperm whales. “Our” sperm whale pods that remain around Dominica all year around. They are used to humans and relaxed in our presence making ethical whale swims possible.

During your week with us, you will spend 5 days out on the open ocean looking for sperm whales and taking in the drop dead beautiful scenery. This is a raw and real experience, and one for the adventurous at heart.
In-water encounters are not always easy but should be possible every day, but we will do our best to get you close to these 20m behemoths. Working with small groups of 3 guests per drop we maximize our chances.
The boat is equipped with a directional hydrophone allowing to track whales over vast distances. We will listen to the ocean first and then start tracking the whales. It is important to note that these encounters are special and cannot be predicted. We will get you the best possible changes for interaction but by no means can it be guaranteed

We will only swim with whales on their terms. Our policy is animal-lead. Fortunately humpback whales are naturally curious and are often interested in humans.
We will not force encounters, respecting the animals signals.

Whale watching
You will be out on the water with the whales all day - closer and more intimate than anywhere else in the world. Sperm whales spend most of their time underwater and when they surface they rest, warm up, socialize or feed their young. We will always observe first and need to gauge if they are open to interaction with humans.
We will be observing the behaviours all day, finding the right time to swim with them. We do this in a respectable way, not interfering in their behaviour, keeping the distance when needed.

If your whale swimming schedules allow it your Insider will organize land tours to see terrestrial animals, water falls or other attractions.
Your guide would especially organize these if the weather or the ocean restrict our activities at sea.

It was an out of body experience. Insider Divers did a great job with planning and coordination of the trip, so we didnt have to worry about anything. They had clearly identified the best tour guide, restaurants, and hotel based on their experience.
Ines is super experienced and makes everyone feel very safe. She always has a positive attitude, helped everyone with equipment, and did everything possible to make sure we had a great time. She’s also an expert on whales and provided multiple interactive presentations to help us learn about the behavior we were seeing (and answered lots of questions in real time on the boat!)

How likely will I see the whales underwater?
It is a fair question but there is no straight forward answer. It is impossible to guarantee swims or even sightings with elusive animals like whales. But INSIDER DIVERS work hard to maximize our chances by going to the right place at the optimal time to achieve success. We use the best operator on the island, who has been involved in marine research on sperm whales and is known to have the "golden ear" for whale location with the hydrophone.
In addition, Dominica has the best chances worldwide to see sperm whales. As they are resident they usually will showevery week throughout the year. It is very rare for people to doa 5 day tour and not see the whales.
What experience level do I need?
Requirements are that you can swim and snorkel. This is open sea swimming, so if you are not comfortable swimming you should get some training. Please talk to us for recommendations on how to get ready for this expedition.
We recommend that you have familiarized yourself with your equipment.
We do not support swimming with buoyancy aids like vests or boards.
What equipment do I need?
You should bring your own mask and snorkel as well as exposure protection (rash guard, jacket or wetsuit). We recommend simple freediving fins as well as a rubber belt for weights (we provide the weights)
When is the best time for sperm whale encounters in Dominica?
The Dominica sperm whale season runs roughly from October through May, when the resident family groups are most reliably present in the calmer months. Encounters are always animal-led and subject to permits and local regulations.
What marine life can I expect in Dominica?
The main focus is resident sperm whales, with chances to see mother and calf pairs, socializing family units, and occasional co-travelers such as pilot whales, pantropical spotted dolphins, and false killer whales. Pilot whales, melonheaded whales, and other cetaceans are possible.
How do I get to Dominica?
Fly into Douglas-Charles Airport (DOM) or use the smaller Canefield Airport. Connections are commonly made through Antigua, Barbados, Puerto Rico, or Miami. Insider Divers shares recommended routings and transfer details on booking.
